Lieutenant Roberto E. Valdes-Miami Police Department

Lieutenant Roberto E. Valdes has been an accomplished member of the City of
Miami Police Department for the past twenty-seven (27) and a half years. He worked extensively in the Crime Suppression Unit and the Special Investigations Section as an undercover narcotics detective. During this perilous assignment, Lieutenant Valdes conducted high-risk operations and wiretaps on long-term narcotic trafficking cases. He worked alongside federal entities such as the Federal
Bureau of Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Department of Homeland Security.

In 2012, Lieutenant Valdes was promoted to the rank of Sergeant, where he supervised the Special Investigations Section, Vice Detail, and the Brickell-Roads Problem Solving Team. 

In 2019, Lieutenant Valdes was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and placed in charge of the Burglary Unit. Lieutenant Valdes holds his current assignment as the North District Field Duty Lieutenant responsible for the overall daily operations of his neighborhood areas and patrol personnel.

Lieutenant Valdes is a member of the Department’s Chaplaincy Detail and a Peer Support team leader. Lieutenant Valdes holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Florida International University, and is a graduate of the Southern Police Institute, 90th Command Officer’s Development Course. Lieutenant Valdes holds a certificate from the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team Law Enforcement Chaplain Program, and he is a member of the Miami-Dade Fellowship of Christian First Responders.

 Lieutenant Valdes has spearheaded the design and creation of the MPD’s first Police Memorial Remembrance Badge and first Police Explorer Badge, and participated in the Autism Awareness Badge, Armed Forces Appreciation Badge, and the 9/11 20th Anniversary Remembrance Badge. The proceeds from the sale of each badge were donated to non-profit organizations. In 2005, Lieutenant Valdes was voted Officer of the Month by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. He was also given the Meritorious Conduct Award in 2005 by the Hispanic American Police Command Officers Association, and the National Association of Police Organizations, Top Cops Awards in 2006.

 He was born and raised in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, and he is a father of three.
