OUR FEATURED SPEAKER...
John Harrison-CEO/President-Harrison Construction
A native Miamian, John was born at Jackson Memorial Hospital and graduated from Palmetto high school in 1968. Thereafter, he lived over a year in Guetersloh, Germany as a Rotary International exchange student where he lived with four different families and attended the 13th year of German high school. After returning home, he attended Purdue University, graduating in 1973 with a degree in Interdisciplinary Engineering. After Purdue, he returned to Miami, where he joined his family’s construction business. Over the course of his professional career, he was involved in the design and construction of many commercial, institutional, educational and medical facilities throughout south and central Florida. John has also been active in the community where he has served as Chairman of the Historical Museum, President of the Executives Association, and on the boards of the Museum of Science and Junior Achievement. He is a former member of the Orange Bowl Committee, and a deacon at University Baptist Church. He has been married to his wife, Beth, for 44 years. They have two children, Joy, and Chip.
Life changed completely late in 2016, when John began to experience weakness and loss of mobility in his right hand. His physician referred him to a neurologist who, after a series of tests, referred him to the Department of Neurology at the University of Miami. In the meantime, weakness and loss of mobility proceeded to his left arm and legs. Walking, dressing, eating, and every other physical aspect of life became increasingly difficult. Finally, in 2018, he was diagnosed with ALS; - Lou Gehrig’s disease. Although the disease is very rare, with approximately 8,000 new cases diagnosed in the US per year, it is almost always fatal, with an average life expectancy of 2 to 3 years after diagnosis.
Miraculously, however, today, John is in far better condition than he was 7 years ago before his ALS diagnosis. He can only attribute this fact to God‘s mercy and healing grace.
