Featured Speaker: Doug Jenson
Dr. Douglas J. Jensen retired after more than 30 years of distinguished service in higher education. He and his wife, Karen, have been married for over 40 years and have enjoyed a life that has taken them to many communities, where they have built lasting friendships and embraced countless opportunities and experiences.
Dr. Jensen became the seventh president of Bismarck State College (BSC) on July 1, 2020, at the height of the global pandemic and during the college’s historic transition to a polytechnic institution. His extensive background in public-private partnerships, workforce development initiatives, higher education pathways with K–12, and fiscal stewardship positioned him to successfully guide BSC through this critical period. Under his leadership, BSC advanced its polytechnic mission—one that prioritizes applied learning and industry engagement—ensuring students graduate with workplace-ready knowledge, skills, and credentials.
During his tenure, Dr. Jensen and his leadership team strengthened business and industry partnerships, launched new academic certificate, associate, and bachelor’s degree programs, and achieved record enrollment while reducing operating expenses to maintain fiscal stability. He also played a central role in securing funding for the Advanced Technology Center, a state-of-the-art facility designed to support hands-on, polytechnic education, and the Bavendick Center, a student and athletic complex that enhances both campus life and community engagement.
Before his time at BSC, Dr. Jensen served as president of Rock Valley College in Rockford, Illinois, and as president of the Alabama Technology Network within the Alabama Community College System. He also held senior leadership roles at community and technical colleges in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. As a proud community college graduate himself, Dr. Jensen has always recognized the challenges students face in pursuing their education and careers. He has consistently championed the belief that “a community college is somewhere you can go where people will believe in you before you are capable of believing in yourself.”
Beyond his professional contributions, Dr. Jensen was known for being visible and engaged on campus, often found where students gathered. Today, he and Karen continue their commitment to service by volunteering, attending community events, and actively engaging with their church. They are proud parents of two adult sons and enjoy outdoor activities with their dog, Oliver, along with their two rescued North Dakota cats, Flynn and Molly.
