Vern holds degrees from the University of Mary in Business and Accounting, as well as a Master’s of Management and an Honorary Doctorate in Leadership.

He dedicated 45 years to the Rural Electric and Telecommunications industry, most recently serving as President and CEO of the National Information Solutions Cooperative (NISC) from 2002 to 2020. NISC is an IT company that provides accounting, billing, and engineering software for over 940 electric cooperatives, telephone companies, municipalities, and broadband providers across all 50 states, American Samoa, Palau, and Canada.

Throughout his career, Vern has served on numerous boards, including CHI St. Alexius Medical Center, the University of Mary, Bismarck State College Foundation, Starion Bank, the Light of Christ Capital Campaign, the God’s Child Project Foundation, the Higher Education Roundtable, the Capital Grounds Planning Commission, Yellowstone Strategies, The Gaia Home Project, Missouri Valley United Way, and the North Dakota Department of Commerce Legacy Investment for Technology Loan Fund (LIFT), as well as Montana Dakota Utilities Resources.

After retiring from NISC in January 2020, Vern answered the call to serve during the COVID-19 pandemic, assisting the State of North Dakota with software development to support the fight against the virus.
